Mediterranean Diet Basic Premises

The Mediterranean Diet is considered a model of adequate supply to meet energy and nutrient levels and is recommended as a therapeutic diet for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases.

The high proportion of complex carbohydrates, low intake of animal protein, high in fiber and monounsaturated fatty acids mainly through a combination of a wide variety of foods typical of Mediterranean countries and are essential in a good food.

The bases of the Mediterranean diet are:

1 – Abundant ingestion of cereals (rice, bread and pasta), legumes (lentils, beans and chickpeas).

2 – Vegetables and fruits in high proportion.

3 – Olive oil as the main source of fat.

4 – Low consumption of dairy products (yogurt and cheese usually).

5 – Food meat in small quantities, high consumption of fish and beans as protein source.

6 – Consumption of wine in moderation and with meals.
